Let’s Redefine National Bullying Awareness Month with BETTER THAN THAT™ Bracelets!

Boo! Can you believe it’s already the first day of October?! While visions of pumpkin carving, changing leaves and football games may be dancing in your head, October 1st ushers in something else that should fill your heart: National Bullying Awareness Month.

In celebration, Wear the Cape is today rolling out our BETTER THAN THAT™ wide-band bracelets – made in the USA and offered now at a discount!  We heard from our focus groups that the thicker rubber bracelet Now available!is the hip thing these days, so we took action on the feedback! And if you haven’t already, check out our blog post that explains the tagline – its roots reach from pop culture to the playground. In short, BETTER THAN THAT means do what’s right, not what’s easy. Because we want every one of you to buy bracelets for yourselves and your loved ones as a reminder to know your worth and act accordingly, we’re knocking $1 off every bracelet for the duration of National Bullying Awareness Month. Starting today, you can buy bracelets to show your commitment to being BETTER THAN THAT for only $4.95 through October 31st (regular price is $5.95). As a reminder, 10% of profits are sent directly to the kidkind foundation, with the remainder going toward developing educational materials and furthering the mission.

According to Wikipedia, anti-bullying month began as a “response to the need to raise awareness of ‘bullying, as it was historically viewed ‘a childhood rite of passage’ and believed that bullying ‘made kids tougher’, when the reality is that bullying has devastating effects such as school avoidance, loss of self-esteem, increased anxiety, and depression.” Sadly, as we know all too well, bullying, in some extreme cases, has and can even lead to suicide.

With an honorable mission that deserves a whole lot more than a pat on the back, various organizations aimed to provide “resources to respond to bullying behavior and to begin the shift of societal acceptance of bullying to social change of addressing the issue through education and support.”

Designating National Bullying Awareness Month is a huge step that we hope makes people stop and listen – but Wear the Cape has a slightly different approach than anti-bullying organizations across the map.

Instead of focusing on responding to bullying behavior, Wear the Cape helps shape kids to be kind from the start. Through our Hero Tags, we create opportunities to discuss decisions that should be made when confronted with various situations – whether being a friend to a special needs classmate or returning dropped lunch money – to build good character. The path to prevention is teaching kids from an early age that it’s more rewarding to be a hero than a bully.

So in addition to raising awareness around a problem, we invite you to help us reverse the trend. This October, please join us and show your support for restoring the power of kindness and character with the purchase of BETTER THAN THAT bracelets. We don’t have to wait till Halloween to be a hero – every day’s a good day to Wear the Cape.

It’s in the Bag…or Vintage-Wrapped Package

Someone once said, “The manner of giving is worth more than the gift” – who doesn’t love receiving and opening a beautiful package? At Wear the Cape, we’ve set up a wrapping “warehouse” (a.k.a. my garage, for now). But this garage is a gallery, adorned with our kids’  framed and hung artwork  to warm up the space (they love to proudly share their masterpieces, and the experts say it builds self-esteem – so, hey…why not?).

We aim for it to be an event when our valued Wear the Cape supporters receive and open each item that they buy. This special experience helps convey the importance of the message.

When you choose to show your support by making a purchase on our site, we mail you a present, beautifully-wrapped in vintage-style recycled paper, stamped with our Wear the Cape logos and finished with a big red bow. Why vintage? It symbolizes the time-honored values associated with kindness and good character.

And every item comes with a “Hero Tag”  that highlights what Wear the Cape is all about. It even presents potential scenarios to discuss with kids and to ask, “Which choices should be made?” You know….kind of like Cracker Jacks surprises, minus all of the calories and sugar. 🙂

Many of you have shared how much you appreciate that this little but chock-full-of-information Hero Tag facilitates a super important (fun!) dialogue that otherwise might not happen due to the daily sprint we call our lives. As we generate more revenue from the profit arm of our company, we will use the proceeds to reinvest in the design and production of new Hero Tags with more character-defining moments that speak to the issues that matter to you most.  We are also working hard to create other products that you’re suggesting and requesting that will help spread the kindness and character movement.

Stay tuned – more exciting choices are on the way! We’re confident that we’ll soon be able to dig out from under all the excitement and momentum that’s causing our first batch of products to fly off the shelves.  And that means you’ll have more opportunities to present the precious kiddos in your life with a ready-to-give present that gives back in more ways than one.

Once again, thank you for the AWESOME level of support. We can’t do it without you.

I just ordered shirts for my kids and me. I think this is a great way to start conversations about doing the right thing and stopping bullies. I hope this woman’s cape takes her to the moon and back.  What a cool mama.
