Kindness is Cool at Woodmont Elementary School!

Woodmont Elementary School, in Pine Brook, New Jersey, showed us how cool it is to be kind, when we presented our Hero Assembly to their students and staff. The students shouted out, “It’s cool to be kind!” during our show. They participated in our role plays with lots of laughs and cheers. They were enchanted with our Cape Kid videos, and immediately started using the Hero Strategies that were taught.

As a school-wide initiative, the students and staff are completing a five-week Kindness Challenge, where they are hoping to track 300 Random Acts of Kindness, in that time frame. We were happy to motivate and encourage all students to participate in this challenge. As well, we brainstormed many ways that individual students can perform Random Acts of Kindness to add to their Kindness Challenge Board.

PTO members and teachers thanked us for visiting, sharing that our program was “Amazing,” and “Just what we needed!”

Thank you Woodmont for choosing to Wear The Cape and spread kindness throughout your school and community.

McGinn School is BETTER THAN THAT™

McGinn SchoolToday we visited the McGinn School, in Scotch Plains, New Jersey, where we presented two HERO assembly programs to their K-2 grade and 3-4th grade students.

The faculty and students of McGinn were so engrossed in our Hero videos that you could hear a pin drop in the room. They immediately began using the super hero strategies we taught during our program. At the end of our assembly, all stood up, in their best super hero pose, and cheered, “I will be a hero!”

After our first show, one second grader stepped out of his class line with an important message for his principal. He stopped and said, “Thank you SO much for bringing this assembly to our school.” The principal told us she has never had a student go out of his way to thank her for such a wonderful assembly. We are so honored that you loved our program!

McGinn SchoolAs we approach the end of the Week of Respect, we remind you that you can be a HERO to someone every day, not just during one week in October. We encourage you to stand up for others, to choose to do the right thing, and to be BETTER THAN THAT™ – better than poor choices, better than others who are not being heroic, and better than what’s not right.

BE A HERO! We believe in you and are counting on you to stand up and choose kindness!

Quality Time Makes a Comeback!

Family Quality TimeSchool is back in session, leaving us longing for the lazy days of summer, yet excited for the potential and possibilities that the school year brings.

As our schedules go from relaxed to overwhelming, it is easy to push aside the quality time you shared with your family over the summer. I admit, I do fall into “the back to school trap.” As parents, we transition into “survival mode” while juggling work, dinner, kids activities, and homework. It feels as if there is no extra time to spend on anything fun. Even play dates have taken a back seat in our family, due to lack of time.

However, our children need and crave that quality time and that down time. In response to my son telling me that he “can only talk to me through my lap top,” I decided to make some serious changes this coming school year in an effort to bring back quality time to my family. Below I’ve listed my school year “Quality Time (QT)“ strategies, should you wish to join my mission to bring “QT” back to your family life.

“QT” Strategies:

Power Down: set a specific time during the after school hours where you turn off your phone and computer so that your full attention is on your children. Let co-workers and friends know you are not available between those hours to return calls or messages. Have your children power down as well.

Leverage Driving Time: Car time can be great quality time. Instead of all but the driver on their devices, bring back a good old game of Eye Spy or 20 questions about your day. Our favorite question is: how were you kind today?

Revive Back Family Game Night: Designate one night a week to play board games with your children.

Move Together: Go for a family walk or bike ride

Break Bread Together: If, like most families, you can’t eat dinner as a family each night due to activities, try to eat a family appetizer (fruit and veggies) before you leave for evening activities or perhaps family dessert upon your return. All you need is fifteen minutes, but the benefits of coming together to communicate as a family will last much longer!

Wishing you and your family a happy and successful school year, filled with lots of love, laughter, and….quality time together.

Yours in Kindness,
The Wear the Cape Team
