Extra Yarn, written by Mac Barnett & illustrated by Jon KlassenExtra Yarnby Mac Barnett & illustrated by Jon Klassen

Knitting, knitting, and more knitting…and always enough yarn to share. We fell in love with Extra Yarn at first read. In this beautifully illustrated story, a young girl knits colorful gifts for everyone (and everything) she comes across in her dismal village. As she shares the yarn with those in need, it never runs out, which allows her to make a significant change in the town where she resides. One day a greedy man tries to buy the priceless yarn and soon thereafter steals it. However, the yarn disappears from him and magically finds its way back to the generous girl.

What we love most about this book is that each time its pages are opened, a new lesson emerges that can be used to teach children of various ages. The lessons are not explicitly stated but implied through the actions and voices of the characters. There are strong themes such as the importance of generosity and community, as well as the destructive nature of greed and teasing. Extra Yarn is a must-read to promote character in children and adults. Purchase “Extra Yarn” on Diapers.Com
